About SPPAN

SPPAN is a highly efficient way of accessing up-to-date official information.

The search box lets you find every instance of a word or phrase in current Scottish Government planning policy and advice documents.

The development plan monitor lists all Scottish development plans with links to relevant web pages. There are separate indices for current current Scottish Government planning policy and advice, circulars, and current drafts.

SPPAN will save you time finding relevant documents. It is much faster than searching Scottish Government or local authority web sites. And once you've found the relevant document, SPPAN will often offer improved bookmarking and cross-referencing, saving even more valuable time.

How SPPAN works

Screenshot of SPPAN bookmarks

Some SPPAN titles are unchanged copies of their Scottish Government counterparts. However, many have been specially reformatted to incorporate hyperlinks and bookmarks.

Hyperlinks are one-click cross-references from one part of the text to another, or to another title.

Bookmarks are an interactive contents list which appears in your PDF reader's margin.

Electronic copying ensures that the text remains true to the original. Over time, the withdrawal and replacement of Scottish Government titles means that some links will become outdated - but that happens with paper copies, too.

Few circulars published before 1996 are published electronically. They are listed in the SPPAN index, but not as full documents. Paper copies are available on request from the Scottish Government.
